Attractions
The thing which attracts most people to winter sports resorts is the reliability quality and amount of snow.
Being the heighest resort in Europe the one thing that Tignes is guaranteed is good snow. The season starts earlier and finishes later than most other resorts.
What sets tignes apart from other resorts is the attractions that can be found and these all help to make Tignes a winter wonderland that may, year after year return to.
Whichever way you travel to Tignes you will have to cross "The Barrage de
Tignes" with its mural by J.M. Pierret. This man made dam had a significant
effect on the whole of France and is well worth taking time out to visit. See
the section on Tignes Barrage.
Whilst not as spectacular as the dam the Grande Motte funicular is another feat
of engineering albeit not on the scale as the dam that is worth finding out
about so you can appreciate what is actually involved in transporting you in
approximately 7 minutes from the base at Val Claret to the Glacier of the Grande
Motte.
Burrow 200 metres into the Glacier and appreciate the development of man through
out the ages in the Ice Grotto, through ice carvings.
