By Road

Driving from the UK, channel crossing can be by Channel Tunnel or Ferry. Suggested ferry companies are Speed Ferries, P&O, Sea France, Norfolk Line, Sally line or Stenna. The shortest drive from Calais (Via Geneva)is 560 miles in a time of 9 hrs 51 mins. The quickest drive (Via Lyon) is 590 miles and a drive time of 9 hrs 14 mins. I favour the latter as the drive from Geneva throught to Albertville is some what pedestrian when using the Route Nationale. Avoid travelling on the French national holidays as the motorways can become very congested and on a Saturday leave additional time to get stuck coming down the mountain, just in case there is an accident or a sudden dump of snow.

Snow Chains

Snow chains are a must in this case and it can pay to have a set in the boot just in case (take some old gloves and a plastic sheet to protect you from the cold and wet when fitting them. If you do not have them you will not be allowed out of the resort until you do or conditions change. In the resort you will pay upwards of 85 euros for the common sizes and it has been known 300 euros for the larger executive cars (Steve Cowell!).
